Hippo Campus sounded even better in person at the Moody Amphitheater last month.

The Minnesota band took to the stage and was met with a roaring applause. Opening with “2 Young 2 Die,” a song from their 2022 album, “LP3,” the band began their 20-song run at 8:30 p.m.

Besides having a bold stage presence and a loud sound, the band has a dynamic relationship with each other while performing. Jake Luppen, lead singer of the indie band, only stopped the show to say hello to the audience, thank fans and announce the band has been officially together for over ten years.

Hippo Campus played a wide variety of their discography but focused on their newer music. The lights were dim, casting a shadow over Luppen, who showcased his wide vocal range, often singing in his signature high falsetto for songs like “Ride or Die.”

Next, the lights became white and fully fluorescent only for the performance of “Way it Goes,” which the band played before the finishing encore.

Concluding the concert with “Buttercup,” the audience sang along and danced to every word. Everyone in the audience was captivated throughout the 90- minute set, in which the band was cheerful to be on stage in Austin, TX.

Panic! At The Disco put on one heck of a show at Moody Center in Austin, Texas. As part of their Viva Las Vengeance Tour, they performed their new album in its entirety plus a handful of previous hits.

A few minutes before Panic! at the Disco appeared on stage, a timer came up on the big screens. It was fun to know exactly when to expect the show to start and the crowd joined together to countdown to the very last second. Brendon Urie appeared as if from nowhere and started singing the first song of the night “Say Amen (Saturday Night),”. They continued the concert by playing other fan favorites such as “This is Gospel” and “Miss Jackson.”

During an intermission, Mr. Urie changed his outfit to mimic the new album, Viva Las Vengeance, and began to play the title track. PATD! played the entire new album in full. Fans happily sang along to the more popular hits “Don’t Let the Light Go Out,” “Say it Louder” and “Something About Maggie”.

After getting thought the entirety of Viva Las Vengeance, they got back to their roots. They started off with “Girls/Girls/Boys,” to which the crowd sang every word. They followed that up with the bands biggest song of all – “I Write Sins Not Tragedies.” Brendon was in a stupor after they ended the song, saying he had never heard a crowd sing as loud as we did in Austin that night.

Panic! at the Disco ended the night with the song that made them reach the top of the charts – “High Hopes.” With a strong start and victorious finish, the audience filed out of Moody Center with huge smiles on their faces.

In anticipation of their eighth studio album “Cracker Island,” the U.K.-based electronic band Gorillaz took over Moody Center, which was filled to the brim with thousands of fans. The group’s music spans a wide range of genres including hip-hop, alt rock, and funk among others. Gorillaz is a band that has always been ahead of its time and continues to be on the cutting edge of modern music.

Gorillaz’s long lasting popularity and creativity was undeniable. Long-time fans and new devotees eagerly sang along to every hit – from ‘Clint Eastwood’, the lead single on their debut album, to their latest release, ‘Cracker Island’. Along the way, there were plenty of favorites such as ‘Feel Good Inc’, and offerings from their recent collaborative project Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez.

It was a high-energy, joyous show from beginning to end, satisfying fans without difficulty. There is something gratifying about seeing an electronic band perform live, when the people behind the machines are revealed.

Gorillaz proved that their music is equally bewitching, whether it pours from fantasy characters twisting through space, or from Damon Albarn on stage playing a melodica. Either way, you can be sure to believe that everyone left the concert feel(ing) good.

Florence + The Machine at Moody Center

Florence Welch is always moving when she performs. The captivating British singer-songwriter is constantly on her feet, her body using as much space on stage as possible, all while singing with unshakable glee. We were lucky to witness Welch’s enchanting moves and hear her signature voice with her backing band The Machine at the 15,000-capacity Moody Center on Tuesday evening (September 27th).

The London native transformed Moody Center into a sort of spiritual revival tent for the night. In the years since her band Florence + the Machine’s 2008 breakthrough hit “Dog Days Are Over,” they have built an extremely loyal, worldwide following. FATM offered 12 of the 14 tracks from "Dance Fever," which is about the revelatory powers of dance. Welch has explained that the project was inspired by choreomania, a medieval European practice where you have the uncontrollable urge to dance, especially in a frenzied, convulsive manner.

Between her Titanic vocals, Welch, 36, spoke in a remarkably soft voice. She pointed out that much of "Dance Fever" was written during the pandemic when her anxiety was at its highest.

Welch resurrected songs from earlier albums, including the springy "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)," the swaying "What Kind of Man" and the electrifying 2009 hit "Dog Days Are Over," during which she paused and asked the fans to put away their cellphones so that we could really experience the moment.

For Welch, this appearance on her current North American tour was highly emotional and liberating. We can’t wait to catch her the next time she floats through Austin.

Festival Review: Austin City Limits 2019 Weekend Two

The 2019 ACL Music Festival brought a star studded lineup that fans were excited to see perform at the wonderful Zilker Park in Austin, Texas.

The festival was headlined by rock n roll legends Guns N’ Roses. They took the stage with their original lineup - bringing one of the greatest rock voices, AXL Rose, and one of the legendary guitarists, Slash, back together again for a night of classic rock hits. They performed some of their biggest hits including Welcome To The Jungle, November Rain, Sweet Child O’ Mine, and Chinese Democracy. The band looked great together once again after many years apart, it felt like they were never separated as the on stage chemistry felt like nothing happened between them. Slash went into an amazing solo through the night and the band ultimately ended their set with an encore which included Paradise City with fireworks to conclude the night.

In 2018 Childish Gambino had to drop out from the festival due to an injury. He returned to headline the festival and give the fans a performance like no other and being 100% healthy and give this show his all as this would be his last live show of touring, according to him. He sang and danced the night away giving the fans an amazing live show he is used to doing. A platform stage in between the barricades to separate the crowd rose as he stood in the middle and spotlights on him drew roars from the crowd. A glory moment in all of ACL history was made. He performed songs such as Summertime Magic, Feels Like Summer, Riot, Human Sacrifice, and of course the hit song This Is America. In his encore set he’d perform 3005, Sober, and ended the evening and his last live show with Redbone.

Other star studded performances included the country singer Kacey Musgraves, young upcoming pop artists Billie Eilish, Tame Impala, Robyn, Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, Kali Uchis, Rosalia, Lany, King Princess, Austin’s very own Gary Clark Jr. as well as Lizzo who drew one of the biggest crowds ever seen at ACL at one of the smaller headlining stages. Not knowing how big of a crowd Lizzo was going to bring to her set, she deserved to be at one of the main headlining stages and stole the show that whole weekend.

ACL continues to put together amazing lineups and we are excited to see what artists they bring next and who will be the next big thing and headline ACL in the years to come.

A new touring festival made its way down to Austin, Texas and brought some talented bands with them. The talented roster included: The Used, Circa Survive, Thrice, Sleeping With Sirens and many more. Alt rock fans suffered through the hot Texas sun to support their favorite bands and there were plenty of hot, sweaty mosh pits throughout the day.

JOSH7191.jpeg

The day started with early sets by Hyro the Hero, Juliet Simms, Four Year Strong and the festival stage being headlined by Sleeping With Sirens. The main stage began with Texas band Memphis May Fire, and they certainly did not disappoint in front of their home state crowd, acknowledging their Texas roots before beginning their set. Next, a strong and very energetic set came from Circa Survive. Within the first minute of their set Anthony Green came out into the crowd and jammed out with die hard fans standing at the barricade. Crowd surfers made their way to Green, mosh pits were started in the back, and Green kept on melting the faces of the front row crowd.

JOSH7855.jpeg

Continuing things were Thrice, with a very heavy set that kept the mosh pits and head banging going. They performed some of their hits and fan favorites such as “Black Honey,” “In Exile,” “Of Dust and Nations,” and ended their set with “Beggars.” The eagerly waited fans stuck through hours of being in the hot Texas sun, pushed around in mosh pits all to watch The Used headline the festival. They opened the set with “Take It Away,” from their 2004 album In Love and Death. Staying on topic with that album, they had the dripping heart from the cover hanging from the top of the stage over lead singer Bert McCracken. The band also did a short cover of “Wonderwall,” by Oasis. After performing the song McCracken said how he disliked the band and went on into their song “I Caught Fire.”

JOSH8676.jpeg

The band ended the night with “Pretty Handsome Awkward,” from their 2007 album Lies for the Liars, and “A Box Full of Sharp Objects,” from their 2002 self titled debut album The Used. We sure hope this festival continues as an annual event and that they bring new and exciting talent in the future.

Having one of the most dedicated fan bases in the music industry right now, Twenty Øne Piløts brought their Bandito tour to Austin, Texas at the Frank Erwin Center. Dedicated fans were camped out hours before doors were open, which shows their passion for Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. Joseph introduced the show coming out in a hoodie and bandana around his face while holding a lighted torch. Dun then showed up to his drumset with a flamed cadillac in the background and Joseph appeared at his mic stand with his guitar in hand ready to start the first song of the night, “Jumpsuit.”

JOSH9037.jpeg

Seeing the show from the crowd, you can tell how much production and work was put in to give their fans something memorable. A bridge came down from above and hovered over the general admission floor for Joseph and Dun to make their way across it to their smaller stage. There they were set up to perform a few more songs. The visuals used on the screens went along the theme of each song performed and the amazing lighting set up from their lighting director was beyond phenomenal.

JOSH9119.jpeg

Towards the end of the show, a lyric video popped up on the screen for the song “Truce” and the whole crowd began to sing before the boys came back out to perform one of their most popular songs, “Chlorine.” The last two songs they performed were “Leave The City,” followed by “Trees,” and that was the end the night. Per usual, they ended the show as they have always done, with a drum set on a small platform that thes crowd held up. Confetti shot up with smoke and on the stage the blazed cadillac made another appearance with fire shooting up for a big celebration to end the night. This is a band you do not want to miss the next time they come to your city, a truly must see.
